We are thrilled to announce the NYSC Legal Aid CDS Group Debate Competition organized by Open Law Innovation Network (OLIN).
The debate is on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence and Law”.
This competition is more than just a debate; it’s an opportunity to explore the intersections of law, technology, and innovation, all while sharpening your advocacy skills.
RULES
The competition will be held virtually across all rounds.
The competition will be open to 8 CDS groups. Each group must nominate a team of three people to represent them. The team members do not need to be lawyers, as long as they are members of the CDS group.
Any group that nominates a representative who is not a member of their group or is not a serving corps member will be disqualified.
Since the competition will be held virtually, each group is responsible for ensuring a reliable internet connection. It is advisable to have a backup internet option available.
As this is a debate competition, participants are expected to speak from memory and should not consult any external materials during their presentation.
Rounds
During the preliminary round, each team will be paired with another team. E.g, if there are 20 teams, there will be 10 fixtures - with each team debating another team.
After the preliminary round, only one team will proceed per fixture. so, if there were 20 teams, only ten will proceed to the second round.
During the second round, each team will be paired against another . Only the four best teams will proceed from the second round to the final round.
The top two teams will compete with each other for the final round while the third and fourth best teams from the second round will compete for the third position.
PS: Hence, the goal of a team in the second round, is not merely to win but to emerge as one of the best four teams overall.
The final round will consist of a third-place competition between the third and fourth placed teams from the second round; and a first place competition between the first and second placed teams from the second round.
Where there is a tie during the second round, there will be a knock-o competition to select the team that will proceed to the final.
